Our team offers oral surgery to address serious concerns, from rebuilding smiles with jawbone grafting, or replacing missing teeth with dental implants. To ensure these procedures are comfortable, even for this with dental anxiety, our team can help with dental sedation. At your Metairie, LA, oral surgery clinic, we can offer calming medications with sedation dentistry.
When Do You Need a Calming Solution?
Oral surgery allows our team to treat complex and advanced oral health concerns, such as tooth loss, the need for a tooth extraction, or even jawbone grafting or a sinus lift. But we want to also ensure your comfort during these treatments. There is no reason for anyone to have a negative experience at the office, or to be in discomfort during and after treatment. After all, oral surgery should bring relief from the serious oral health concerns impacting your oral health, such as imbalanced jaws or injury. Our team will take a number of factors into account when we choose the right calming agent for you, so you can enjoy a relaxing visit at the office.
The Factors We Look At
Our team will take a close look at any medications you currently take, as well as your medical and dental history. We will take your age, weight, and anxiety levels into account too. Often, people with dental anxiety have trouble even undergoing minor treatments like cleanings, but we can help them with a calming treatment. The same goes for patients with special needs. We have three different sedation options, and we will choose the one most appropriate for you.
Our Calming Options
One of the more common procedures is nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. We administer this through a mask worn over the nose. You inhale the gas and enter a calm and euphoric state. You are conscious and can respond to the dentist, but will have little to no memory of the procedure. The effects wear off quickly, some can even drive them home or return to work or school.
For a deeper state of calm, we could administer oral sedation before the procedure in a liquid or pill form. You’re still conscious, but the state of relaxation is deeper and you will likely have no memory of the procedure, and will need someone to bring you home afterward. IV sedation, the deepest available, is administered intravenously and you will have no memory of the procedure and will require a ride home as the effects take time to wear off completely.
