sedation dentistry Metairie LAOur oral surgeon takes our patients’ comfort very seriously. Since our practice provides a number of oral and maxillofacial surgery treatments including bone grafting, dental implants placement, and wisdom teeth removal, it’s important to ensure that our guests are relaxed and comfortable during treatment. We offer sedation dentistry for ideal emotional and physical comfort.

Sedation dentistry eases the mind, relaxes the body, and reduces physical discomfort. While our team provides high-quality oral healthcare, our patients can rest without worry or discomfort. There are different levels of sedation dentistry to accommodate a diverse range of needs.

Types of Sedation Dentistry

Some forms of sedation are milder than others for minimally invasive treatments while others are stronger for longer, more involved procedures.

The mildest form of sedation dentistry is the administration of nitrous oxide. You might know this type of sedation by the colloquial term “laughing gas.” Nitrous oxide is used by doctors and dentists to increase comfort during a wide range of procedures. This form of sedation is ideal for managing mild to moderate discomfort and nervousness during minimally invasive treatments.

Oral sedation is another common method for managing anxiety and discomfort. This type of sedation involves taking a prescription medication about an hour before your appointment. The type of medicine prescribed is a mild but effective sedative that typically comes from the class of drugs called benzodiazepines. Oral sedation relieves anxiety and works well with the analgesic properties of local anesthetics.

When it comes to longer treatments or more invasive procedures, our oral surgeon might administer conscious IV sedation. This type of sedation is much stronger than others but it does not induce a medically unconscious state. Patients will rest peacefully and comfortably during treatment but can still be roused to respond to questions and instructions.

Our oral and maxillofacial surgery practice is committed to providing a comfortable environment for all our guests. We administer safe sedation dentistry by adhering to strict treatment protocols with FDA-approved medications.
